Les quatre chèvres

Two Goats

A very narrow bridge was improvised connecting two high mountains. The bridge was like a narrow wooden plank slung across the two mountain tops and had neither railings nor even ropes for protection. From the bridge, looking below, a long way down, ran the treacherous rapids of a mighty river meandering through giant boulders.

Un pont très étroit reliait deux hautes montagnes . Le pont n'était qu'une planche de bois jeté entre les deux sommets et n'avait ni rambardes , même pas de corde de protection . Du pont , en regardant en bas , très en dessous , bouillonnaient les rapides tumultueux d'une rivière qui coulait entre des rocs géants.

One day, a mountain goat came along and wanted to go across the bridge to the other side of the mountain. The goat started walking over the narrow bridge. Mountain goats are sure-footed animals and are fearless mountain climbers.

Un jour une chèvre des montagnes voulut emprunter le pont pour atteindre l'autre côté de la montagne  et se mit à marcher sur le pont étroit . Ces chèvres montagnardes ont le pied sûr et escaladent sans peur.

At about the same time, another goat started crossing the bridge from the other end. The two goats came face to face in the middle of the bridge. The bridge being very narrow, the two goats could not go past one another. And there was no way the goats could make about turns. There was absolutely no possibility that the goats could turn back.

A peu près au même moment  de l'autre côté, une autre chèvre se mit  à traverser le pont . Le pont  était si étroit que deux chèvres ne pouvaient s'y croiser . Il n'y avait non plus aucun moyen pour elles de faire demi -tour. Absolument aucun.

The second goat spoke arrogantly to the first goat, "You are obstructing my path. Get out of my way, you silly goat! I am in a hurry to go to the other side."

La seconde chèvre parla à la première sur un ton arrogant : " Vous me coupez la route . Sortez de mon chemin espèce d'imbécile . Je suis pressée de gagner l'autre rive"

The first goat replied, "I was first to step on to the bridge and therefore I have the right to cross the bridge first."

La première chèvre de reprendre : " Je me suis engagée sur ce pont la première et de ce fait j'ai le droit de traverser ce pont la première "

The second goat retorted angrily, "I am the strongest goat around. I have never lost a fight with other goats. Look at my great big horns and think again. Either you quickly get out of my way or else...!"

La seconde répliqua avec colère : " Je suis la plus forte de toutes les chèvres du coin . Je n'ai jamais perdu une bataille avec n'importe laquelle d'entre elles. Regardez bien mes cornes et réfléchissez  plutôt  deux fois qu'une. Ou vous dégagez promptement, où sinon ..."

The two goats started fighting. Their horns locked and it was indeed, a strange sight to behold. High up above on a narrow bridge two goats could not come to terms with each other. They threw caution overboard and as a result there ensued a battle between two fools. Both goats lost their balance and fell to their certain deaths.

Les deux chèvres se mirent à se battre. Leurs cornes entremêlées faisaient un étrange spectacle . Rn hauteur deux chèvres ne parvenaient pas à s'entendre. Elles jetèrent par dessus bord toute précaution et une bagarre démente en résulta.  Les deux chèvres perdirent l'équilibre et tombèrent pour évidemment en mourir !

After one week, by a strange co-incidence, two other goats started crossing the bridge from the opposite ends. One goat from this end of the bridge and the other goat from the other end. And the two goats met in the middle of the bridge.

La semaine suivante par une étrange co-incidence , deux autres chèvres, chacune de son bord, se mirent à traverser. Un chèvre d'un côté, l'autre de l'autre . Et les voilà qui au milieu se rencontrent ! 

The first goat spoke most politely, "I beg your pardon sir. It was too late when I realized that you were also crossing the bridge from the other end. Anyway, I am much younger than you are. I have been taught by my parents and by my teachers that I must respect my elders and that we should be gentle and kind to all creatures."

La première chèvre s'exprima poliment : " Je vous demande pardon . Il était trop tard quand j'ai réalisé que vous alliez à votre  tour traverser le pont . Toutefois, je suis  beaucoup plus jeune que vous et j'ai appris de mes parents et de mes professeurs que je dois respecter les personnes âgées et traiter avec bonté toute créature."

"Furthermore, I remember the advice that when confronted with any problem, first offer a prayer to the Lord and seek His guidance. Problems and solutions always go together. Think of a bath towel. If one end of the towel is where problems like to reside then the other end of the towel is where solutions reside. Both ends go together wherever the towel goes. Problems and solutions are inseparable. One has to merely search for the solution. I must first think about a clever solution."

Qui plus est  je me souviens de leur conseil quand nous sommes confrontés à un problème. D'abord prier le Seigneur et demander son aide. Problèmes et solutions vont de pair. Pensez à une serviette de bain. Si le problème se situe à un bout de la serviette , à l'autre bout gît la solution . Les deux bouts restent ensemble où qu'aille la serviette. Problèmes et solutions sont inséparables. L'on doit chercher joyeusement la solution. Je dois d'abord en trouver une intelligente." 

The second goat said, "And what might that be?"

La seconde chèvre dit : " Et quelle pourrait-elle être? " 

The first goat said, "Let me sit on this bridge with my head turned to one side so that you can slowly and carefully step over my back and cross over. I will then get up and be on my way."

Le première chèvre dit : "Laissez moi m'asseoir sur ce pont  ma tête positionnée sur le côté  de façon à ce que vous puissiez en faisant bien attention passer par dessus mon dos et  me traverser. Alors je pourrai me lever et continuer ma route." 

Thus the two goats crossed the bridge safely.

C'est ainsi que les deux chèvres traversèrent le pont en toute sécurité.
