Le jour et la Nuit

 

An Abbot gathered together his students and asked them: "How do we know the exact moment when night ends and day begins?"

Un Abbé réunit ses étudiants et leur demanda : "Comment savons nous exactement quand la nuit se termine et  quand le jour commence ?"

"It's when, standing some way away, you can tell a sheep from a dog," said one boy.

"C'est lorsque en se tenant à une certaine distance on peut distinguer  un agneau d'un chien ", dit l'un 

The Abbot was not content with the answer. Another student said: "No, it's when, standing some way away, you can tell an olive tree from a fig tree."

L'Abbé ne fut pas satisfait de cette réponse . Un autre étudiant dit : 

"Non c'est lorsqu'à une certaine distance on peut distinguer un olivier d'un figuier "

"No, that's not a good definition either." "Ce n'est pas la bonne définition non plus ! "

"Well, what's the right answer?" asked the boys. " Quelle est la bonne réponse alors? "demandent les garçons 

The Abbot said: "When a stranger approaches, and we think he is our brother, that is the moment when night ends and day begins."

L'Abbé dit ; "Quand un étranger s'approche et que nous le prenons pour notre frère , voilà quand la nuit nuit cesse et que le jour commence "
