My King

My King (Mon Roi), TBC

The emotions run close to the surface in this vivid account of the giddy highs and miserable lows of a toxic relationship. Recovering after a near-fatal skiing accident, Tony (Emmanuelle Bercot, extraordinary) is forced by her therapist to confront her emotional suffering as well as her physical pain.
We learn about her 10-year relationship with charismatic, unreliable Georgio (Vincent Cassel) through the flashbacks that play out as she picks over the wounds of their failed marriage.
Director Maïwenn (of Polisse fame) is an actress herself, and gives her performers the freedom to improvise their parts from a tightly developed plan – the technique is reminiscent of the films of John Cassavetes. The result is a bracing candour and emotional intensity.
Even in his most anti-heroic roles, from La Haine through Irréversible, Vincent Cassel exerts an extraordinary magnetism, and it’s to his credit here that we never question the fact that Tony would fall for this self-confessed “king of the jerks”. It’s such a persuasive portrait of a relationship that we grieve for the good times once they are over.
