Diogènes

When Alexander the Great appeared before the Greek leaders in Corinth, they greeted him warmly and paid him lavish compliments - all of them, but one: a funny fellow, a philosopher named Diogenes. He had views not unlike those of the Buddha.  Quand Alexandre le Grand arriva à Corinthe les leaders grecs l'accueillirent avec chaleur l'accablant de compliments , à part l'un d'eux : un drôle de petit bonhomme , un philosophe appelé Diogène . Ses idées étaient proches de celles du Buddha. According to him, possessions and all the things we think we need only serve to distract us and get in the way of our simple enjoyment of life. So he had given away everything he owned and now sat, almost naked, in a barrel in the market square in Corinth where he lived, free and independent like a stray dog. D'après lui toutes nos possessions et toutes les choses dont nous pensons avoir besoin ne sont que distractions et nous empêchent de jouir simplement de la vie . Aussi avait -il donné tout ce qu'il possédait er passait -il son temps assis, à moitié nu, sur un tonneau sur la place du marché de Corinthe où il vivait, libre et indépendant tel un chien perdu. Curious to meet this strange fellow, Alexander went to call on him. Dressed in shining armor, the plume on his helmet waving in the breeze, he walked up to the barrel and said to Diogenes,  Curieux de rencontrer cet étrange personnage, Alexandre alla vers lui.  Vêtu de sa reluisante armure , la plume de son casque mue par la brise il s'avança jusqu'au tonneau et dit à Diugènes "I like you. Let me know your wish and I shall grant it." "Vous me plaisez . Dites moi ce que vous aimeriez et je vous l'accorderai " Diogenes, who had until then been comfortably sunning himself, replied, "Indeed, Sire, I have a wish." Diogènes qui jusque là était en train de se faire bronzer confortablement répondit : " Eh bien, Monsieur, j'ai un souhait en effet." "Well, what is it?" "Bien, et quel est-il?" "Your shadow has fallen over me: stand a little less between me and the sun." "Votre ombre m'est tombée dessus: veillez vous tenir un peu moins entre moi et le soleil" Alexander is said to have been so struck by this that he said: "If I weren't Alexander, I should like to be Diogenes." On raconte qu'Alexandre impressionné aurait dit : " Si je n'étais pas Alexandre, j'aimerais être Diogènes"    Unknown Author
