Diamond Hill

The Diamond (centre), one of the Twelve Bens in Connemara National Park. Real name "Ben Ghuaire" named after a 16th King celebrated by bards for his generosity ('one of his arms was longer than the other for constantly giving out presents'). It is the only mountain in Connemara with steps to the top provided for climbers. One of those 'climbers' was Guglielmo Marconi who opened a station in Connemara in 1907 and had radio cable trailed from the Diamond's summit down the valley and back up its neighbouring mountain (Cnoc Breac), both of similar height. Thus this stately mountain's contribution to the development of radio today. (You can see this photo and the other Eleven Bens at my studio in Spiddal Craft Centre)
